3 Gem Travel Destinations

Must-book destinations for a girls’ weekend, a solo soul reset, or your next creative escape

By Maxine Gibbon

We all know the big names: Franschhoek for superb Cape wine, Paternoster for quintessential fishing village vibes, Clarens for sandstone mountains scenes… but South Africa’s real magic often lies in the lesser-known corners. The kind of places where time slows down, the food tastes like a handwritten recipe, and locals greet you by name come the afternoon. Whether you’re craving connection, disconnection, or a fresh perspective, here are three underrated destinations to add to your bucket list, each one perfect for a girls’ getaway, solo trip, or creative recharge.

1. Rosendal, Free State: aka The Free State’s Best Kept Secret

Rosendal is THAT friend who surprises you with home-cooked food and long conversations under the fruit trees. Unexpected, warm, and unforgettable.

Tucked between golden hills and dusty farm roads, Rosendal feels like the sort of place you’d stumble upon in a dream. A three-street town with a theatre, a wine bar in a converted petrol station, and a bakery that rivals any in the city.

Here you wake up to sun-drenched mornings and, on the weekends, friendly chats over coffee at MoCo Coffee cart. Cycle your way around with a rented mountain bike, join the locals for a round of social tennis, or browse for little tucked-away affirmations and poetry tucked into corners around town. For a mid-morning treat, head to Rosendal Handelhuise for waffles that are honestly worth the drive from anywhere in SA. And you haven’t had a sunset experience until you’ve taken in the golden hour at the sandstone overhang with Holkrans Sunset Experience. After dark, swing by The Service Station Wine Bar for a G&T with a side of charm: owner Mason is part sommelier, part storyteller, and a whole lot of vibe.

Where to stay?
For charming country quirk, book to stay at the beautifully restored Post Office guesthouse, where clawfoot tubs meet a floor-to-ceiling library, and every corner tells a story. Bonus: it’s pet friendly. Another great option is The Rosendal Country Retreat: luxe, considered, and calm, another gem that fits the fairytale feel of the town.

2. Prince Albert, Western Cape: Think Wes Anderson meets the Karoo

It’s the kind of place that invites you to pause. Where even the air feels like it’s whispering, “slow down, take your time.”

Only four hours from Cape Town but somehow a universe away, Prince Albert is a solo traveler’s dream and a creative’s paradise. Think dusty pink skies, an Art Deco theatre, and an unhurried rhythm that makes you want to put down your phone and breathe a little deeper.

Mornings are slow and sweet, starting with locally roasted coffee and buttery croissants from Hendry’s Artisinal Bakery & Coffee Shop. If you’re a carrot cake lover, don’t pass by the Lazy Lizard. Pop into Chommies (part cafe, part concept store) on the main road to discover curated South African design, sip and snack, and pick up a stylish something for your pup Yes, doggos are welcome.

Afternoons are made for viewing local art at Prince Albert Gallery, or olive oil tastings at O For Olive. And for those who like a bit of movement, hike up Gordon’s Koppie or join a yoga class at Karoo Yoga. There’s also the Saturday farmer’s market for homemade cheese & yogurt from Gay’s Guernsey Dairy, local crafts, and pannekoek done right. Come sunset, there are surprisingly quite a few dinner options, but you do need to book. Lamb shank at Prince Albert Cafe  or pizza under the stars at @Yellow House Prince Albert are not to be missed.

Where to stay?
A night at De Bergkant is a soft-life dream with a scented steam & sauna room, prosecco with cherries in the bath, and three sparkling pools to choose from. It’s luxurious and romantic, with high ceilings, and candlelit corners. If wrap-around verandahs, freshly squeezed lemonade, and an Alice in Wonderland-esque garden are more your beat, Prince Albert Country Stay is warm, personal, and charming.

3. Stanford, Western Cape: The Laidback Cousin of Hermanus

Stanford is a haven of tranquility and still quirky enough to feel like a discovery. Bring your journal, your basket, and your appetite.

This riverside village is one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it towns, but if you do, you’ll forego something special! A slower-paced, leafier version of Hermanus, Stanford is full of small-town charm with a growing foodie and farm-to-table energy. The Saturday Morning Market is well worth a visit, where you’ll find everything from artisanal breads and home-churned butter to biltong and fynbos bunches. Don’t miss the MannaBrew cart for a superfood “coffee” made from roasted mesquite pods. It looks like coffee, sips like coffee, but comes with a nutty, caramel flavour, and without the caffeine crash.

Stanford Valley Country Lodge is the ideal spot for a memorable long lazy lunch under the oak trees. With horses grazing nearby and delicious seasonal dishes that are beautifully plated, it’s the kind of place that makes you wish you could stay longer. As for Madre Restaurant: it’s worth the trip alone for its exceptional wood-fired fare and minimaluxe Karoo aesthetic.

Where to stay?
Speaking of stays, Coot Club is a dreamy retreat tucked into a private nature conservancy along the Klein River lagoon. It’s a sanctuary for rare birds (including the endangered African Black Oystercatcher), and the lodge itself was designed to blend into the landscape with minimal environmental impact. Think morning swims, rowing boats instead of roads, beach hikes and evenings lit by firelight and starlight.

Why These Hidden Gems Work So Well

It’s fair to say that most of us crave more meaning and less noise, now more than ever, and these towns offer the perfect antidote. They’re low-key but not boring, soulful without trying too hard, and full of the kind of people who leave jars of homemade jam at your door.

Whether you’re packing your bags with your besties, setting off solo with your camera and a good Spotify playlist, or looking for the quiet that lets ideas flow again, these places deliver. And then some.
