Mauritius: An Accessible Paradise

Craving sun, sea, and some much-needed serenity Jeannie enjoys a week of island magic in Mauritius.

There are few places in the world that live up to their name quite as spectacularly as Paradis Beachcomber in Mauritius. Paradis — French for paradise — is exactly what this week-long escape turned out to be.

Getting to Mauritius from South Africa is, quite literally, a breeze. With around 52 flights a week between the two countries — Air Mauritius being the most popular — this tropical gem is one of the most accessible international destinations for South Africans craving sun, sea, and some much-needed serenity.

After a smooth flight, it’s just over an hour’s drive from the airport to Paradis Beachcomber, nestled on the island’s lush southwest coast. And as the resort came into view, framed by the iconic Le Morne mountain on one side and endless turquoise ocean on the other, I instantly knew… this was going to be special.

The Best Room in the House (Well, According to Me)
We booked a Junior Suite on the Beach, which I now fully believe should be renamed The Best Room Ever. Spacious, beautifully designed, fully equipped, and quite literally on the beach — we fell asleep to the sound of waves and woke up to the most perfect ocean views. There is just something magical about walking straight from your suite onto powdery sand, coffee in hand, before the world wakes up.

The Weather Gods Were on Our Side
Full confession: I arrived slightly anxious. There had been reports of a possible cyclone — every traveller’s worst nightmare. But Mauritius, in her unpredictable island glory, delivered. We had glorious weather all week, with one dramatic thunderstorm that swept by in the night, leaving us to wake up to another perfect day.

The humidity? Next level. Even the most skilled hairdresser couldn’t tame this frizz. But that’s part of island life, right? You surrender to the elements, and suddenly your wild hair becomes part of the vibe.

Play, Relax, Repeat
One of the things that sets Paradis Beachcomber apart is the sheer amount of activities on offer. Their sports club is world-class — tennis courts, padel courts, and to my surprise, a table tennis setup that awakened my inner Forrest Gump (I’m weirdly good, in case anyone Is wondering).

The gym is spacious, modern, and fully equipped — because there’s nothing like earning your poolside cocktails. And speaking of earning your drinks… their 18-hole golf course is spectacular, with breathtaking views at every turn, even if you’re more about the stroll than the swing.

Eat. Drink. Repeat.
Naturally, we tried every restaurant — for research, of course — and the food? Top notch. Fresh seafood, international classics, and local Mauritian flavours all executed perfectly. And then there were the cocktails — dangerously good. Think tropical, fruity concoctions that taste like a summer holiday.

For my fellow wine lovers — the flowing French rosé deserves a special mention. Chilled, crisp, and always on hand. Heaven.

Why Mauritius Should Always Be on a South African’s Travel List?
There’s a reason Mauritius remains a firm favourite for South Africans. It’s close, with no visa hassles, and has that perfect blend of luxury, natural beauty, and warm, friendly people.

The beaches are sublime — white sand and water so clear it looks filtered. Add to that a fascinating mix of cultures, and you have a destination that feels both exotic and familiar.

It’s a place where days stretch long and slow, where you can be as active or as lazy as you like — snorkelling, paddleboarding, or simply sipping rosé with your toes in the sand.
